A Private Casino Reborn as a Twenty-One-Room Palace

Before it was a hotel, Casa Palacio María Luisa was Jerez's casino, not a gambling hall but a private club where the city's high society met to talk and play cards under the kind of ceilings this building still has. The restoration kept that grandeur, four-poster beds, period mouldings, a central patio now topped with a glass roof that floods the atrium with daylight, and added blond cedar furniture, USB ports and designer lighting without flattening the period feel. Works from the María Luisa family's own art collection, including pieces by Rafael Macarrón, hang alongside a steel palm sculpture and mini Meninas figures on the grand piano, so the house still reads as lived-in rather than staged.

Why It Works

We chose this hotel for the details that a five-star rating alone wouldn't reveal: a doorman in hat and tails at the entrance, turndown service with a homemade cake and a chilled bottle of manzanilla from the family's own sherry winery, and a choice of Molton Brown or a Seville-made toiletry line. The 21 rooms split between premium, deluxe and suite categories, and two of them, the María Luisa Suite with a bathtub set into the old chapel, and the Suite Jerez, are reason enough on their own. Add a rooftop plunge pool and a quiet back garden with a fountain, and the result is a city hotel that still feels like a private house.

Why This Location

Calle Tornería sits inside Jerez's old quarter, close to the city's sherry bodegas and the vineyards that supply them with palomino, Pedro Ximenez and Moscatel grapes, and a short walk from the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. Restaurante 22, the hotel's own kitchen, opens directly onto the street for non-residents, and the neighbourhood holds its own weight beyond the hotel: the Michelin-starred LÚ Cocina y Alma and Mantúa are both nearby. Jerez's airport and motorway links also make the town an easy base for day trips to Cádiz, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

Rooms Built on Period Detail

The 21 rooms, split between premium, deluxe, junior suite and suite categories, keep the four-poster beds, high ceilings and period mouldings of the original house, updated with blond cedar furniture, USB ports and designer lighting. Some rooms face the street and the square outside, others the back garden; the María Luisa Suite goes further still, with a bathtub set into what was once the house's chapel. Egyptian cotton, linen or silk bedding runs through the rooms regardless of category, a detail that keeps the five-star standard consistent from the entry-level premium room up.

Sherry, a Garden, and a Rooftop Pool

La Terraza, the garden bar-restaurant, serves light meals and cocktails around a fountain that makes the back garden one of the calmer addresses in the old quarter, while the rooftop plunge pool and terrace give the hotel a second, more private outdoor space above the rooftops. In the evening, the bar leans into its private-club inheritance, pouring Jerez brandies, wines and sherries in a room built with a fireplace and a guest salon rather than a standard hotel lounge. It is a small enough property that these spaces still feel like someone's house, not a hotel amenity list.

Before You Book

Restaurante 22 is not always open, so confirm dinner reservations ahead, especially since the kitchen leans on seasonal Cádiz produce that can change the menu week to week. Breakfast is optional and charged separately, continental or cooked, so factor that into the rate before booking. Parking is limited and best arranged through the hotel's valet or self-service options rather than on arrival, and guests travelling with pets should flag it in advance, since allowances come with a supplement.
