El Castillo La Ciudadela Marbella
We selected this hotel for its singular setting: a thirteen-room property raised inside the ancient...
Hotel Claude occupies a refurbished seventeenth-century building on Calle San Francisco, in the older streets around Marbella's historic core, a few minutes' walk from Plaza de los Naranjos. The restoration kept terracotta tiled floors and wooden, beamed ceilings and paired them with contemporary furnishings rather than a period pastiche, so each of the seven rooms reads as individually decorated rather than templated. The whole house can also be rented as a single property for up to fourteen guests, which sets it apart from the usual room-by-room Marbella stay and points to a design built around private groups as much as individual travellers.
We chose Hotel Claude for its size: seven rooms mean every patio, every terracotta floor and every beamed ceiling gets real attention, something a larger hotel in the same old-town streets rarely manages. Six Superior Deluxe rooms open onto their own private patios, and the one suite adds a traditional bathtub inside forty-five square metres, enough space to make it feel separate from the rest of the house. A rooftop terrace, sauna and library round out the common spaces, and the option to book the whole house for up to fourteen guests makes it as workable for a small group as for a couple.
Calle San Francisco sits inside Marbella's older streets, a short walk from Plaza de los Naranjos and its orange trees, as well as the Bonsai Museum and the town's bullring. The beach is roughly ten minutes away and the nearest golf club about three kilometres out, close enough for a morning round without committing to a resort stay. Malaga Airport is around 39 kilometres away, making the hotel a workable base for both a city break centred on the old town and day trips along the Costa del Sol.

Six of the seven rooms are 35-square-metre Superior Deluxe doubles, each with its own private patio, terracotta floors and beamed ceilings carried through from the original house. The seventh is a 45-square-metre suite with a sofa and a traditional bathtub, large enough to work as a quiet base for a longer stay. Because the whole property has only seven keys, decorating choices read as individual rather than repeated, and the option to book the entire house for up to fourteen guests turns the same rooms into a private villa stay when a group wants it.
The rooftop terrace is the hotel's quiet centrepiece, a place to end the day above the narrow streets of the old town rather than in them, and the sauna and library give the house two more spaces built for slowing down rather than socialising. Dining stays low-key: a restaurant, a bar, an outdoor restaurant, and packed lunches for a day at the beach or on the golf course, with nothing that tries to compete with the old town's own restaurants a short walk away.
Pets are not allowed, though children are welcome, so families should plan accordingly. With only seven rooms, the hotel books out quickly in high season, and travellers hoping to rent the whole house for a group should confirm availability well ahead. Malaga Airport is close enough for a direct transfer but far enough that a taxi or rental car is worth arranging before arrival rather than on the day.
